Electric Dog Collars

At one point in your life as a pet owner, you will want to consider using electric dog collars to train your pets.  No surprise there as these dog collars serve a practical purpose.

Proper Use
The ultimate benefit of an electronic dog collar is that it will make for a well-behaved dog.  Your dog will stop chewing on things, digging up the entire neighborhood, jumping from one yard to the next, barking at his own shadow and disobeying your commands.  In short, you have a dog to be proud of.  These benefits are only possible with the proper use of these dog collars.  You have to use any of the electric dog collars in conjunction with positive reinforcement instead of as an instant form of punishment.

Thus, you have to provide dog treats and positive actions like hugs whenever your dog makes the proper response to the electric shock.  This is especially true during the introduction phase when your dog is still getting used to the idea of the collar and its electrifying action.  Most manufacturers of shock dog collars will provide steps on how to make your dog accustomed to the devices.  You should follow them both for your sake and your dog.

It is very important not to abuse the electric shocks to correct every single misbehaving action since it can only lead to two things.  First, your dog can become immune to the shocks and, hence, continue to disobey your commands.  Second, your dog can start to develop aggressive behavior to counteract the frightening experience of being provided with electric shocks at almost every turn.  Either way, you defeat the purpose for which you bought the electric collar in the first place.

Most dog trainers recommend pet owners to attend one or two classes on how to use electric dog collars.  Although this is a safe device since the electric shocks are controlled, it can be a dangerous tool in the hands of an inexperienced or abusive pet owner.  When used in the right way, an electric dog collar can deliver electrifying results in a good way.  You will soon have a dog that is more attuned to your feelings, more obedient of your commands and more of a loving companion than a great responsibility.

Right Choice

In many ways, the right choice in an electric dog collar is the first step in its right use.  After all, making your dog wear one that is not suited for his size, personality and needs is counterintuitive to your purposes.

First, you should look at the features of the electric dog collars.  Ideally speaking, the best electric collar is one that allows the pet owner to control the intensity and duration of the shock, has a long-distance range, and possesses a tone and/or vibration feature.  If it has Internet GPS capability, then so much better in case your dog gets lost.

Second, you must consider the price.  Bells and whistles are good but if you or your dog does not need them then it is logical not to pay for them.  Just make sure that you have the basics covered and it should be value for your money.

So, now that you know about electric dog collars, isn’t it high time that you purchase one for your misbehaving best friend?
